Bells Of Balangiga (2005)
When Ferdinand Magellan discovered the Philippines in 1521, he brought with him church bells that have since played a special role in the lives of the Filipinos. Every town in the archipelago has its church bells, symbols of community pride and identity. This is a country where church bells are so revered that they’re even baptized. Of all the bells in the Philippines, none are more celebrated or infamous than the bells of Balangiga, which today are to be found on a U.S. Air Force base in Wyoming and with the U.S. 9th Infantry in Korea.
This is a story of a small town in the Philippines that takes on the U.S. Army in a battle that includes among others the Pope and the past and current presidents of both the Philippines and the United States. The Filipinos are determined against all odds to get back their three bells that now sit as war trophies: two on an Air Force base in Wyoming and one in the demilitarized zone (DMZ) in Korea.
Director Jack Silberman uncovers America’s first taste of imperialism and the attempts by Filipinos today to recover The Bells of Balangiga. The Bells of Balangiga will be a one-hour documentary for television to be shot of High Definition video.
